The Crystal Caves
Cairns
At a glance
The Crystal Caves is a crystal, fossil and mineral attraction at 69 Main St, Atherton, on the Atherton Tablelands, just over an hour from Cairns. The experience is built around a man-made cave environment that turns a private collection into an interactive walk-through display.
Inside the caves, visitors can explore more than 600 crystals and fossils from around the world. The displays include gemstones, mineral specimens and prehistoric fossils, with opportunities to touch and photograph many of the pieces. The setting combines natural history with imaginative construction, creating an informal, hands-on experience rather than a conventional museum visit.
A visit can also include a geode-cracking activity, which offers a look inside a 44-million-year-old volcanic bubble. After the cave tour, the family room provides space for children to fossick for crystals in a sandpit, draw on a large blackboard and take part in colouring activities. The gift shop extends the collection into a retail setting, with crystals, fossils, gemstones, mineral specimens and jewellery available to browse.
The Crystal Caves suits families, couples, crystal enthusiasts and visitors interested in fossils or geology. Its touchable displays and creative activities give younger visitors ways to engage with the collection, while the range of specimens provides plenty for adults to examine. The attraction also welcomes furry and feathered family members, making it a flexible stop for travellers exploring Atherton and the surrounding Tablelands.
