These magical, award-winning tours with Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon, are now listed as One of Australia's Ultimate Must-Do Experiences. Willie takes guests to his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, and explains how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality, and will have you thinking about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can strengthen us all.
Rainbow Serpent Tour - This tour takes you to six rock art sites including an ancestral Birth Cave where Willie's father and grandfather were born. You'll gain an understanding of the spiritual meanings and stories behind the paintings, and along the way learn some of the survival techniques of the Nugal-warra people - and maybe taste a green ant or two! Includes an estimated 30 minutes bush walk; there is a short climb to two of the sites, but generally the terrain is easy.
Departs Cooktown 7.45am. Duration 5.5 hours.
Great Emu Tour - This includes a visit to three rock art sites including the Great Emu Cave, and provides a fascinating introduction into Aboriginal culture and spirituality, and an understanding of why this art is so important to present and future generations of Nugal-warra people. Suitable for most ages: there is a short climb to one of the sites, but overall very little walking involved.
Departs Cooktown 1.45pm. Duration 3.5 hours.
