Don’t miss the Cairns Historical Society, where you can see vintage photos and hear about the days when tin mining and pearling shaped the local economy. It’s low-key, but you’ll get a side of Cairns most tourists overlook.

And if you wander into the suburb of Manunda, you’ll find heritage-listed Queenslander homes that speak to the city’s tropical climate past,timber, high on stilts, built to stay cool but sturdy through cyclone season. On a personal note, I love grabbing a coffee near the old Cairns Hospital precinct, then strolling around to spot old plaques and faded signs that give you a peek into the area’s past.
