Hiking & Trekking in Cairns

If you’re into hiking, Cairns is a bit of a dream spot. The Great Dividing Range looms nearby, plus the wet tropics give you everything from rainforest walks to steep, challenging trails. One of my personal go-tos is the climb up Walsh’s Pyramid. It’s a tough 4-hour round trip, but that summit view? You won’t forget it. It’s less crowded early in the morning, so I’d suggest starting before the heat kicks in.

The nearby Wooroonooran National Park has some quieter tracks where you can catch saltwater crocs out in the rivers (give them plenty of space though). Barron Falls Lookout is another must-see, and the walk to the top of Mount Whitfield is a nice intro hike with unexpected city views. Oh, and take insect repellent – the mozzies get lively once the sun dips.

One little tip I always share is to pack plenty of water and a light snack, especially if you’re heading out past the usual spots. Cairns’ weather can turn quickly, so keep an eye on the sky and don’t push too hard if it’s feeling sticky or overcast. You’ll find that hiking here isn’t just about the steps, it’s about soaking in a wild landscape that feels just a bit different from anywhere else in Australia.
