Ferry Sightseeing in Cairns

If you’ve spent any time in Cairns, you’ll know the coast looks completely different from the water. Jumping on a ferry for a sightseeing trip is an easy way to soak in views of the city skyline, the Coral Sea, and the nearby mangrove patches that you don’t get when you’re stuck on land.

One of my favorite routes takes you out past the Cairns Marina, where you might spot local fishers hauling in a catch or watch pelicans swooping down for a snack. The ferries here aren’t huge tourist machines but laid-back enough to feel like a local ride. Timing your trip for early morning or late afternoon can make the light look incredible, perfect for snapping photos.

If you get a chance, hop over to Fitzroy Island by ferry. It’s a popular day trip that locals sneak in when they want a break from the hustle. The rides aren’t just about the destination either; the subtle shifts in the water, the light on the reef flats, and the occasional splash of a passing turtle make each trip something different. Don’t forget to grab a spot at the front of the ferry – you’ll get a better view and cooler breeze.
